Amey Ghosalkar : : : : : : : : : : : The robustness of the Lilavati Lalbhai Library building, designed by Rahul Mehrotra, is of a bold, young, vibrating-with-ideas, respectful youth. The campus is undergoing changes, and opening up new vistas to review with fresh breath even the older buildings. The new library building is large in size and has a visibly strong presence – housing a large collection of books but also exhibiting some strong architectural ideas. The building adopts a characteristic language – that of the louvers – an architectural element much debated and discussed within schools and traditions of critical regionalism, to architecture of a global south in the wake of an Internationalism within the modern style. In India, louvers became a key element to imagine modernism that was local, because it responded to the regional climate. The language of louvers that the building adopts and the way it’s ground floor turns into a series of solid-relief formations, the building extends itself into the landscape of the surrounding public zones, and makes for a beautiful and unique presence. And as you enter this building, the form-mass of changing valencies and formations, the building behaves and operates much like a kaavad – a traveling shrine where multiple doors keep opening to reveal inner layers leading to a core. Initially, it started with having a story in mind. The story was based on a conspiracy theory, of DO ALIENS EXIST? We all have our theory on this topic and I have mine too. The story is about how aliens are the supersmart living on Mars, how they have the most unique inventions, machinery, and some amazing technology which is the future of technology for earthlings. But they lack one thing that the earthlings are blessed with and that is ‘Nature’, and now their entire focus is directed towards replicating nature. The planet where these aliens live in the ‘ Marsiverse’. How ironic is the fact that the earthlings are creating more and more technology and in turn hampering Nature which is so abundant here whereas aliens are trying their best and creating the best technology to create Nature! This story gave rise to the illustration that you are viewing right now!

The first step in this process was understanding the existing contours on site, and then modifying them so as to help in the ease of water drainage on site. Necessary plans have been created to show these applications on site. The addition of rain gardens helps in percolation of water into the soil, thus increasing the underground water table. Aluminum-steel gratings have been proposed around the tree trunks, to help in increasing the absorption of water content. Rain water harvesting system has also been proposed, with rainwater downtake pipes on top of the built structures to further help in making this a sustainable project. Gradation

Narrative: The Design proposal served as an interface between the city of Mumbai and the people of Dharavi. The design evolved in response to the lifestyles of the people. The site has two main entrances, one leading to offices and the other leading to the night school, workshops, studios, and the performance area. A chai tapri and newspaper stall provide a social arena that forms the transition between the two spaces. The scarcity of economic means pushed us to devise strategies for an intelligent use of the available resources. Shipping containers presented themselves as a cost-effective solution to our problem. They are the perfect shape and size to be repurposed as a habitable space. The high density of Dharavi asks for an intensive use of spaces, where multiple functionalities coexist in the same physical space, and where borders between interiors and exteriors are blurred. Households are open to the street, and as a result become part of the highly salient social texture of the community. Keeping this in mind, the incubation cells and coworking spaces were meticulously zoned to incorporate narrow streets and small seating areas that serve as spots that facilitate as well as encourage communication and interaction between the young entrepreneurs. The interconnections made between different offices on the first-floor level create more circulation spaces. Through the second entrance, the exhibition, and the performance area on the right stand as the centre of attraction. The performance area is connected to studios and practice rooms. On the left, through a series of workshop areas (pottery, leather tanning, tailoring, etc) one advances towards the longitudinally spanning school and the library situated on the first floor.

He saw marauder jack atop the hill, And thought, jack was the one to steal. They brawled, jack fell down and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after. Kath kuni is a local and ancient building practice which has survived in the foothills of Himalayas for Centuries. The main materials used are locally available stone and wood. The word kath kuni is derived from Sanskrit Kasht and Kuni which implies wood in the corners. It is characterized by interlocking wood and stone which is topped with slate roof which helps to hold the roof in place. Many of the structures along the foothills of himalayas are built using this technique and are centuries old surviving all types of seismic and climatic forces. A typical Kathkuni house is two to three storey but can reach up to 7 storey high. Walls are doubled skinned and made of alternate layers of stone and wood. The thick walls help in maintaining the temperature and thus making it suitable for living. The Yurt

This representation of the journey of humans from the past has been detrimental to himself because of his deeds. Today in this moment of realization he stands and witnesses the horizon and has the choice to decide whether he wants to sustain through clean methods or take the current course and dive to extinction.
