Competition Brief:
The aim of the competition is to design a designers work studio which can break the conventional model for small office spaces, and create a space that fosters innovation, collaboration and productivity.
Narrative:
The Designer’s Square is aimed at creating a dynamic studio with an amalgamation of formal and informal spaces within a minimal area. The user interaction with the site is comprehended by distinguishing public and private zones by incorporating indigenous Wada architecture in the form of space orientation; inclusion of courtyards, terraces, and openings. The playful patterns at the entrance of the café develop an intriguing fascination amongst the road commuters. Its vibrant interiors and lush green courtyards enliven the interiors. An innovative staggering is adopted instead of the typical stacking of containers developing cantilevered closed spaces and open terraces as informal discussion spaces. The landscape mates with the form and creates dramatic pause points for one to contemplate and work alongside the green scapes enclosed within large openings. In addition to reusing the shipping containers, the project utilizes recyclable materials to boost sustainability. Installations of discarded glass bottles, which can be designed by regular visitors of the cafe; in conjunction with seatings made of car tires and cane, while the use of bicycle wheels creates an inviting roof for the pavilion. Timber frames, steel, and glass assimilates with the corrugated form of the container and also blend with the design.
