Competition Brief:
Solar decathlon India invited students from Indian institutions to join forces to combat climate change by designing net zero energy-water buildings under various categories like multi family housing, resilience shelter, educational building.
Narrative:
Mumbai, a city of seven islands, is one of the biggest cities of India and is also the financial and entertainment capital of the country. Post-independence, these industries attracted people from all over the country in search of jobs. Flash floods/ seasonal floods trouble the city almost every year. This leaves many vulnerable populations without shelter and food.
Thus, students from Rachana Sansad's academy of architecture propose a solution by identifying possible sites and campuses and redesigning them for better disaster management of the city. Our team has partnered with the BMC G- South Ward office of Mumbai to identify these vulnerable settlements and populations and provide adequate facilities in times of disasters. By using shipping containers, the design offers a rapid construction time frame and better structural resilience. Vihaan with the way it has been designed, is an efficient solution to absorb panicked people in difficult times, calm them down and accommodate them making them feel as if it's their home.
